A fireplace is an architectural structure used to hold an open fire within a building. The primary purpose of a fireplace may be heating or cooking. Some are used for blacksmithing or smelting metal. Chimneys often accompany the fireplace to evacuate the smoke.

From early in human history, fireplaces and the mantles surrounding them have often been both decorated and decorative. Sometimes, the fireplace surround might be an elaborate artwork of tile mosaic. Others might feature detailed wood carvings. The guard bar of the andiron, a metal structure used to keep the burning logs from rolling, was often of ornate metalwork. Such decorative fireplaces can be viewed in many of the world's art museums.

Fireplaces were once vital to survival in cold climates. Today, other methods of heating have largely replaced the necessity of the fireplace. Yet, many homes, vacation accommodations, restaurants, or lobbies contain a fireplace for its nostalgia and appeal.

Fireplaces are often used to create a comfortable, intimate environment. The Cracker Barrel restaurant chain pairs lit fireplaces with antique items in an attempt to capture the atmosphere of a bygone era. Fireplaces are desirable in cabin-style vacation rentals. Other establishments contain false fireplaces that use lights, videos, air-swept cloth, or other means of visually simulating a fire in the fireplace. They may symbolize home, warmth, family, and togetherness. Someone knitting in a rocking chair by a fireplace is a common visual.

From the base of these lines, extend two straight lines slanted at opposite diagonal angles. Connect them with a straight line. Then, extend a straight line upward from each, and connect them at the top with a curved line.
